Bastian Schweinsteiger leaves Manchester United and moves to the Chicago Fire in the USA. The 32-year-old has signed a one-year contract, reports the Chicago Tribune newspaper, citing a local source.

In the report, the former Bayern professional is quoted as saying: "In my career I have always looked for opportunities in which I can make a positive contribution and help build something big. My move to Chicago Fire is nothing else. " After talking to manager Nelson Rodriguez and coach Veljko Paunovic, he was convinced of the club’s vision and philosophy from Major League Soccer (MLS). There is initially no official confirmation of the transfer.

Hardly any missions at Manchester United

According to the report, Schweinsteiger could join his new team next week. The former Bayern Munich professional and former international has been under contract with Manchester United since summer 2015, but has rarely been used under coach Jose Mourinho. At the beginning of the season, he was only allowed to train with the reserve team. Since November Mourinho has used him at least temporarily in the FA Cup and in the League Cup.

"Will be a great example of a champion"

He was also substituted in the Europa League against AS Saint-Etienne. But speculation about a move to Schweinsteiger, who is married to the former tennis player Ana Ivanovic, has been speculating in the USA for a long time. He himself had said that the United States was an option. Schweinsteiger’s contract with Man United runs until June 30, 2018.

"In the cabin, he will be an excellent example of a champion," said fire trainer Paunovic, according to the report. "He is still someone who can show that on the field and show others how we work, prepare, behave, think and work together to reach this level."
